Every November, whilst the men around me grow moustaches, I find my own way to support this vital cause. This year, I’m walking 60 kilometres to raise funds and awareness for Movember—and it’s deeply personal.

The Men We Love Deserve Better
I may not be able to grow a moustache, but I can use my voice, my energy, and my commitment to fight for the men in my life. Because men’s health issues affect us all—they impact our fathers, partners, brothers, sons, friends, and colleagues.
The statistics are heartbreaking: globally, men die on average six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. One man dies by suicide every minute. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men.
These aren’t just statistics. They represent the men we love, the lives cut short, and the conversations that never happened because silence seemed easier than vulnerability.
Why I Walk!
Walking 60 kilometres is my way of showing up for men’s health. It’s my contribution to a cause that doesn’t require a moustache—just determination, compassion, and a refusal to accept the status quo.
Every step I take carries meaning:
Solidarity – I may not face the same health challenges, but I stand alongside the men who do. My walk says: you’re not alone, and your health matters.
Breaking barriers*– Men’s health shouldn’t only be men’s business. By participating as a woman, I’m helping to show that caring for the men in our lives is everyone’s responsibility.
Starting conversations – My visible commitment opens doors for discussions that might otherwise never happen. It gives permission for the men around me to speak up about their own health concerns.
Honouring loved ones – Every kilometre is a tribute to the men I’ve known who’ve struggled in silence, who’ve battled cancer, who’ve faced mental health challenges, or who we’ve lost too soon.
Making a Real Difference
The funds raised through Movember support groundbreaking research and practical programmes that are genuinely changing outcomes for men worldwide. From developing better treatments for prostate and testicular cancer to creating mental health resources specifically designed for men, every pound contributes to saving lives.
But the awareness is equally crucial. As a woman supporting Movember, I help normalise these conversations in spaces where they might not otherwise occur. I encourage the men in my life to prioritise their health, to book GP appointments, to check in with their mates, to recognise that asking for help is strength, not weakness.
A Personal Call to Action
You don’t need a moustache to make a difference in men’s health. Whether you’re male or female, you can:
– Check in meaningfully with the men in your life
– Encourage them to seek help when needed
– Donate to support life-saving research
– Share stories that break the silence
– Challenge the outdated belief that men must suffer in silence
The men we love deserve better than a culture that teaches them to ignore pain, dismiss symptoms, and bottle up emotions until crisis point.
Why 60 Kilometres?
Because the men in my life are worth every single step. Because change requires effort and commitment. Because I want my actions to match the importance of this cause. 60 represents the lives lost daily to suicide and related issues, this figure is a reminder of how many voices are silent!
This Movember, I’m walking for the fathers teaching their sons it’s okay to talk about feelings. For the friends courageously sharing their mental health struggles. For the partners who’ve faced cancer diagnoses. For the brothers we’ve lost. For every man who deserves to live a longer, healthier, happier life.
This Movember, I’m walking 60 km because the men we love are worth fighting for.
