First commercialised in the 1950s, polypropylene has grown to become the world’s second most widely produced plastic resin by volume, valued across packaging, automotive, textile and industrial applications for its balance of low density, mechanical strength and chemical resistance.
For UK manufacturers, polypropylene is of particular importance because it is one of the few commodity plastics that is both widely recyclable in principle and increasingly mandated for recycled content under domestic packaging policy. Understanding its chemistry, grades and processing behaviour is essential for specification, compliance and sustainability reporting.
Polypropylene is a linear hydrocarbon polymer with the repeating unit -[CH2-CH(CH3)]-. Its properties are governed largely by the arrangement of methyl side groups along the polymer backbone, which determines whether the resin is isotactic, syndiotactic or atactic. Isotactic polypropylene, the dominant commercial form, is semi-crystalline and offers the best combination of stiffness and heat resistance.
Density: approximately 0.895–0.92 g/cm³, making it one of the lightest commodity thermoplastics
Melting point: typically 160–166°C, allowing use in hot-fill and steam-sterilisable applications
Tensile strength: moderate to high, with good fatigue and flex resistance from repeated hinge-and-flex cycles
Chemical resistance: strong resistance to acids, alkalis and most organic solvents
Moisture resistance: very low water absorption, suited to food contact and outdoor use

Polypropylene carries resin identification code 5 under the internationally recognised numbering system. Unlike some other plastics, polypropylene is genuinely and repeatedly mechanically recyclable: post-consumer material can be sorted, washed, reprocessed into pellet form and reintroduced into manufacturing with only modest degradation in mechanical properties over multiple cycles.
Recycled Polypropylene (rPP) typically delivers substantial environmental savings relative to virgin resin, including reductions in cradle-to-gate carbon emissions and process energy demand, though exact figures vary by feedstock quality, sortation method and reprocessing route. Manufacturers using rPP should request supplier-specific life cycle assessment data rather than relying on generic industry figures when reporting savings.
