A Day in the Life of a Crate

Hours to become something new.

The crates that arrive at our Castleford site have usually had a decade or more of working life. Fish markets. Distribution centres. Factory floors. Supermarket back doors. Some have crossed the country countless times. Others have spent their entire service life on a single site, moving product across one loading bay and back.

By the time we see them, they are scuffed, cracked, no longer fit for the job they were designed for. A retail customer does not send a crate to us because it is slightly past its best. They send it because it has reached the point where it can no longer be relied on in operation. That is the material we work with, and it is exactly where the opportunity sits.

What happens next tends to surprise visitors.

The transformation inside our facility is faster than most people expect. A crate that took a decade to wear out is granulated, washed, extruded into molten polymer, cooled and cut into pellets, often within the same working week. By the time those pellets leave Castleford, they are no longer crates. They are raw material. Ready to be moulded into a new crate, a new container, a new component, destined for a supply chain that is almost certainly already waiting for them.

The technical detail matters because the quality of what comes out depends entirely on the care taken at each stage. Granulation produces a consistent particle size that the downstream process can rely on. Extrusion heats the polymer and pushes it through a die, forming the continuous strands that become pellets. Each stage is calibrated. Each stage is tested. Recycled resin has to perform in the same production lines that virgin material runs through, and our customers are not interested in excuses.

What strikes me most about this work is not the speed of the change, though the speed is genuinely impressive. It is the quiet ordinariness of it. Every working day, trucks arrive, crates are unloaded, and a material the world had finished with is turned back into a material the world can use. There is no spectacle. There is no announcement. There is process, repetition and a team that has been doing this long enough to know exactly how to make it work at scale.

That is what the circular economy actually looks like in practice. Not a slogan on a report. Not a diagram with arrows on a website. The physical work of turning something finished into something useful, done properly, repeatedly, and on a commercial scale.

The crates that arrived this week will leave as pellets within days. The pellets will leave as new products within weeks. Somewhere in the country, a fleet manager, a grower or a supermarket will take delivery of a crate that has begun its second life here. They will not know it came from the one they sent us last quarter. They do not need to. The polymer does not count its lives. It just carries on being useful.

That is the point of what we do.
